Recipe For Mulled Apple Cider

I gotta be honest, I am not a fan of mulled anything or pumkin spice whatdoyamacall it, BUT this recipe I discovered a few years ago when trying to do different hot, non-caffeine drinks at Christmas to replace our usual mint tea and …I LOVE it!

And I’ve used it in my practice for probs 3+ Christmasses and a LOT of my practice members love it too. So it must be good, right?!

You let me know in the comments. Remember its super-sweet so add water to adjust the sweetness levels. Enjoy Dr Craig

Hot Apple Cider
From the desk of Dr Craig

I’ll be honest I’m not really the biggest fan of spicy hot drinks in the Fall and Christmas, but I made this recipe and was very pleasantly surprised. So, I thought I would share it with you and, indeed, we now have it in the practice for you to sample!

This recipe calls for fresh apple cider and pure maple syrup. Start with only 6 strips each of the orange and lemon peel, and adjust water levels and spice levels to suit your taste. All spice berries are (available in UK and Canada, also know as Jamaican spice,  but I have never used them yet)

Prep: 5 mins Cook:10 mins Total: 15 mins Servings: 6

Ingredients

Ingredient Checklist

  •  6 cups apple cider
  •  ¼ cup real maple syrup
  •  2 cinnamon sticks
  •  6 whole cloves
  •  6 whole allspice berries (optional)
  •  1 orange peel, cut into strips
  •  1 lemon peel, cut into strips
  •  3 cups water (or adjust to taste)

Directions

Instructions Checklist

Step 1 – Pour the apple cider, water and maple syrup into a large stainless steel saucepan.

Step 2 – Place the cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice berries (optional), orange peel and lemon peel in the center of a washed square of cheesecloth; fold up the sides of the cheesecloth to enclose the bundle, then tie it up with a length of kitchen string. Drop the spice bundle into the cider mixture. (Alternatively you can drop the ingredients in and sieve them out later)

Step 3 – Place the saucepan over moderate heat for 5 to 10 minutes, or until the cider is very hot but not boiling.

Step 4 – Remove the cider from the heat. Discard the spice bundle. Ladle the cider into big cups or mugs, adding a fresh cinnamon stick to each serving if desired.

Enjoy and have a Very Merry Christmas and A Healthy and Abundant New Year!
